HDMI and HDCP

What is the HDMI?

HDMI, as we all know, is a very popular high-definition multimedia interface. It is a digital video/audio interface technology. It is a dedicated digital interface suitable for image transmission. It can transmit audio and image signals at the same time. The maximum data transmission speed is 18Gbps. (Version 2.0), and HDMI signals can directly transmit audio and video information, and there is no need to perform format conversion (digital to analog or analog to digital) before signal transmission.

What is the HDCP?

High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) is a high-bandwidth digital content protection technology. The specification was led by Intel and the purpose is to "prevent unauthorized recording by users" to copy content and protect copyright. It can protects content by interfering with illegal copying and reducing the quality of the image.

Where will HDCP be applied?

It is an important anti-piracy technology for high-definition movies and TV programs. Monitors that do not support the HDCP protocol cannot play copyrighted high-definition programs normally.

HDCP requires the joint support of software and hardware, and all devices involved in content transmission are indispensable

For example, the Blu-ray disc player cannot record clear programs at the same time when playing high-definition discs, and cannot clearly record the programs on the monitor when playing the discs on the computer. HDCP protects the video signal from start to finish, which means that every link in the entire playback system must support the HDCP protocol. If the monitor does not support the HDCP protocol, then the HD program cannot be played normally, and only a black screen or low image quality can be seen. To support the HDCP protocol, digital video interfaces such as DVI and HDMI must be used, and traditional analog signal interfaces such as VGA cannot support the HDCP protocol. When using an analog signal interface such as VGA, the picture will drop to low picture quality, or it will be prompted that it cannot be played, thus losing the meaning of high definition and preventing piracy.

The game console starts with PS3, including the current PS5. If the cable/monitor you use does not support HDCP, it may cause a black screen and become unusable. Just turn off HDCP in the settings.

HDCP is a relatively popular digital content protection technology, but the HDMI video interface that supports HDCP protection is better. Therefore, many people who need to use HDCP digital content encryption technology will use the HDMI video interface for transmission.

HDCP HDTV Buying Advice

Many recently manufactured TVs are HDCP compliant; however, if you buy an older set, you may not be able to watch movies, play games, or watch Netflix.  No matter whether your HDTV uses HDMI or DVI, please make sure it has at least one HDCP supported input before purchasing. Not every port on the TV complies with the HDCP standard, so please read the user manual before you start connecting the cable to your TV.
